India Gate has several synonyms such as gate way of India, and gate of India. It is differentiated with similar structures in the country with a prefix. Therefore, delhi India gate is different from Mumbai India gate, though both were built during British regime. The fact that it was built during British era is the reason it has the typical European architectural stamp on it. Unlike the Moghul constructions, European architecture has fewer intricate carvings and inlays.
There are few domes and cylindrical shapes in the design of India gate. European architecture of that period predominantly used large square, cube or rectangular blocks almost stacking it up like lego sets. Therefore, this structure seems considerably different from Hindu and Muslim architecture that is found in the country. Sir Edwin Lutyens designed this structure around 1931 in the honor of Indian soldiers who had laid down their lives during the first World War.
Other interesting facts about India gate in Delhi are that it is 42 meter tall and hexagonal in shape. The diameter of this monument is almost 625 meters. The India Gate lies on Rajpath which is a popular road out here. It looks spectacular in the evening with lighting. Hawkers and eateries line up in surrounding grounds, making the structure come alive. Many people come here to relax in the evening or take a morning walk around this gate.
