The Nagarjuna Sagar is an extremely rich and intriguing project on the bank of river Krishna. This place of historic importance got its name from a well-known scholar- Acharya Nagarjuna. An interesting thing about Nagarjuna Sagar is its history which relates the civilizations dating back to thousands of years. The construction of the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam has been an important event for the people of Andhra Pradesh. About Nagarjuna Sagar Dam one can easily say that it has brought tremendous prosperity to the people of Andhra Pradesh.  It plays a critical role in power generation and serves many irrigational needs as well. The Nagarjuna Sagar has had one of the earliest inceptions in the series of Dam construction in Andhra Pradesh.

The Nagarjuna Dam construction was inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in the year 1955. The complete ion of the project took approximately twelve years but upon its completion, it has solved a number of miseries of the local people. It has greatly helped the farmers of different districts, in particular, providing them tremendous aid in irrigation. The project brought dramatic changes in the economy as well, especially of two districts. It has not only mitigated the grievances of the people but has touched them by bringing a lot of prosperity and ease in their lives.
