Rashtrapati Bhawan or Rastrapati Bhavan could be said to be official equivalent to the Capitol Hill of the US, or No.10, Downing Street of the UK. However, it is the President of India who resides here, and not the prime minister.

India President house is better described as a mansion, though it qualifies as a palace as well. It has nearly 340 rooms to accommodate guests. The rashtrapati bhavan of India is comparatively recent structure having been designed by the British architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens.

Much of this architecture mirrors the trends in European architecture of the time. There were a few controversies associated with the site, about the gradient, and Lutyens failed to impress upon authorities to raise the gradient. It was Lutyens’ associate, Baker, who finally prevailed. This house was built for the viceroy.

It took almost 17 years to complete the construction starting from 1912. Its facade has several high and cylindrical columns holding up the ceiling at a height, adding to the visual elegance and creating an impression that the structure is taller than it actually is. In all there are four floors to this building. One of the interesting facts about rashtrapati bhawan is that it has beautiful grounds full of roses. Over all, the rashtrapati bhavan is an impressive structure from outside though the view from inside may not be as impressive as Lutyens would have desired.
